The Different Roasts Explained
Like many people, you may have caught yourself wondering what the difference between coffee roasts. Well consider this your first lesson in understanding the world of coffee roasting. In general we offer three different kinds of roasts which include; light, medium, and dark roasts. First, the light roast is generally light brown in color, thus the name “light”. It is a milder coffee flavor and there will not be oil on the surface of the beans because they are roasted for a shorter time period, not allowing the oils to break through.
Next, the medium is a little darker in color than the light and has a stronger flavor. The medium is often consider the American roast, because it is generally served and preferred in the US. Medium-dark is rich in flavor with a little darker color than the medium. You will also find that there is some oil present on the beans and it may have a slightly bittersweet after taste.
Lastly, the dark roast is exactly what it sounds like dark. The coffee beans are roasted long enough to produce an oily surface and produce shiny black beans. There is also a distinguishable bitterness to this roast.
